How to remove closet mold and prevent humidity for good?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet on the outside wall has started to get these black specks on our leather bags and shoes. It’s been getting worse since the humidity spiked a couple of months ago, and I’m worried it’s spreading to the clothes. We run the AC constantly but it doesn't seem to help this specific corner. What’s the most effective way to remove this mold for good and what can I do to keep the humidity down in that enclosed space?

That black speckling on leather in a closet is a classic sign of a surface mold issue, almost certainly fueled by high humidity. The enclosed space and the outside wall are key clues—the wall is likely a "cold bridge" where condensation forms, creating a microclimate perfect for mold, even with the AC running.
For removal, first address the items. Wipe down leather goods with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated leather cleaner. For clothes, a hot wash with detergent is typically sufficient. To treat the closet itself, a solution of diluted vinegar or a CDC-recommended bleach solution (1 cup bleach to 1 gallon of water) can be used on non-porous surfaces. Always wear an N95 mask and gloves during cleaning to avoid inhaling spores. Prevention is the critical, permanent fix. The humidity in that corner needs to be reduced. Start by thoroughly cleaning the area to remove the organic food source. Then, improve air circulation; leave the closet doors ajar and ensure no furniture is blocking the AC vent in the room. For a more robust solution, a small, portable dehumidifier or a rechargeable moisture absorber (like silica gel packs) placed inside the closet can make a significant difference. If the problem is persistent and you suspect it's within the wall itself, a professional inspection with moisture meters and thermal imaging can identify the exact source of the condensation. In many Dubai villas, this is related to insufficient external wall insulation. |
