How to remove closet mold and prevent humidity in Jumeirah?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall, has a persistent damp smell that’s getting worse. We’ve lived in our villa in Jumeirah for 5 years, but this only started after the unusually humid winter. I just pulled out a stack of winter clothes and found several sweaters with small black speckles on them. What's the most effective way to not only clean this mold but also stop the humidity from causing it again, especially since we keep the AC running?

The persistent damp smell and visible black speckles you describe are classic indicators of a mold infestation, likely caused by the high humidity levels we experienced this winter combined with a potential micro-climate within the enclosed closet space. Even with AC running, closets on interior walls are prime locations for condensation and stagnant air, allowing humidity to spike above the 60% threshold where mold thrives.

The most effective removal process for contaminated textiles like your sweaters requires immediate action. For washable items, a hot water cycle with a mold-inhibiting detergent is the first step, followed by sun-drying, which utilizes UV rays as a natural disinfectant. For dry-clean-only items, you must inform the cleaner of the mold contamination. However, cleaning the items alone is a temporary fix if the source humidity within the closet structure is not addressed.

To prevent recurrence, the root cause must be identified. This often involves a professional inspection to check for hidden condensation issues within the wall, inadequate insulation, or a slight negative pressure differential that draws humid air into the space. We would measure the exact humidity levels within the closet and the room to diagnose the problem. Preventive measures include ensuring a 2-inch gap between the closet and the wall for air circulation, using a renewable desiccant like silica gel, and installing a small, standalone dehumidifier or a duct booster to ensure conditioned air actively circulates through the closet.

Given the persistence of the issue, I strongly recommend a certified inspection. Improper handling can aerosolize spores and spread the contamination. Our teams at Saniservice are equipped with thermal imaging and moisture meters to pinpoint the exact cause and execute a remediation plan compliant with Dubai Municipality guidelines.
