How to remove closet mold and prevent humidity?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black, speckled mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall. The air in the room has felt more humid than usual since the weather got really hot and we've been running the AC non-stop. I'm really worried about it spreading to our clothes and causing health issues. What's the most effective way to clean this existing mold and, more importantly, how can I stop the humidity from building up in that closed space to prevent it from coming back?

Based on your description of a black, speckled patch on an interior wall, you are likely dealing with a common surface mold, often Cladosporium or Aspergillus, exacerbated by Dubai's high ambient humidity and the microclimate created by continuous AC operation. The immediate condensation occurs because the closet's interior wall is likely a cold bridge—the temperature difference between the air-conditioned room and the unconditioned void space within the wall causes moisture to condense, providing the perfect environment for mold.

For immediate remediation, personal protection is critical. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Isolate the area by closing the closet door and sealing the gap with plastic sheeting if possible to prevent spore dissemination. For a small patch (less than 1 sq. ft.), scrub the area with a solution of detergent and warm water, followed by a thorough wipe-down with a diluted bleach solution (1 part bleach to 10 parts water) to disinfect and kill residual spores. Ensure excellent ventilation during this process. Do not simply paint over it, as the mold will regrow.

However, cleaning addresses only the symptom, not the cause. The core issue is humidity control within that enclosed space. To prevent recurrence, you must promote air circulation. First, avoid overfilling the closet; clothes packed tightly restrict airflow. Leave a few inches between the wall and your clothing rack. Consider installing a battery-operated dehumidifier or moisture absorber (like those containing calcium chloride) inside the closet. Most importantly, leave the closet door ajar for several hours each day to allow the room's conditioned air to circulate and equalize the humidity levels. Ensure your AC unit is serviced regularly and that its condensate drain line is not blocked, as this can contribute to overall indoor humidity.

For a confirmed and persistent black mold issue, especially if there's a musty odor or the affected area is large, a professional inspection is strongly recommended to rule out hidden growth within the wall cavity. Our certified team at Saniservice uses thermal imaging cameras to identify moisture sources and conducts air quality testing to determine spore concentration. We are fully compliant with Dubai Municipality's environmental health and safety standards.
