How to remove closet mold and prevent it in UAE?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom’s walk-in closet, which doesn’t have a window, has had this musty smell for weeks. I finally pulled all the clothes out and found a patch of black, speckled mold on the back wall where it meets the built-in shelves. We run the AC constantly, but I guess the humidity from our showers still gets trapped in there. What’s the best way to clean this safely and are there any specific dehumidifiers or moisture absorbers that actually work in a small, enclosed UAE closet to stop it from coming back?

Based on your description, you are dealing with a classic case of mold growth driven by the UAE's high ambient humidity and condensation issues, exacerbated by a lack of ventilation. The musty odor is a key indicator of microbial volatile organic compounds (MVOCs), confirming active growth.

For remediation, safety is paramount. Do not dry scrub the area, as this will aerosolize spores. For a small patch (under 1 square meter), you can carefully clean it yourself. Isolate the area, wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Use a HEPA-filtered vacuum to capture loose spores from the surface. Then, scrub the affected wall with a solution of detergent and water. After cleaning, disinfect with a solution specifically designed for mold remediation, ensuring it is approved for use in the UAE. Avoid bleach, as it does not address the root moisture problem and can damage materials.

Prevention is critical. The closet's lack of airflow creates a microclimate where humidity condenses. Simply running the AC is not sufficient for an enclosed space. You must actively manage the moisture. For a small closet, a compact, electric desiccant dehumidifier is vastly superior to disposable moisture absorbers, which are ineffective in Dubai's climate. This unit should be placed inside the closet and set to maintain humidity below 60%. Furthermore, leaving the closet door ajar for several hours each day to allow conditioned air to circulate is a necessary practice.

However, given that the mold is on a structural wall, there is a potential for hidden growth within the wall cavity if the moisture issue has been persistent. For a definitive assessment and to ensure the infestation is fully resolved, a professional inspection is strongly advised. Our certified inspectors at Saniservice use thermal imaging and moisture meters to identify hidden dampness and the exact source of the humidity. We can provide a certified remediation plan to ensure your home is safe. For a consultation, please call 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com.
