How to remove closet mold and prevent it permanently?« Back to Previous Page

My apartment in JLT has been getting a strange, damp smell from the walk-in closet for the past few weeks. I checked behind the shoe racks and found a few small black spots on the wall, which I'm sure is mold. With the humidity creeping back up, what's the most effective way to clean this and prevent it from coming back for good?

Based on the conditions you've described in your JLT apartment, you are dealing with a classic case of closet mold, a very common issue in Dubai due to our high ambient humidity and the constant cycling of air conditioning, which creates significant temperature differentials and condensation.

The small black spots are likely Cladosporium or Aspergillus, which thrive in poorly ventilated, dark spaces. For a small, localized area, you can attempt remediation using a solution of distilled white vinegar or a commercial fungicide registered for use in the UAE. Always wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Scrub the area thoroughly, but avoid simply bleaching it, as this will only remove the color and not the root structure. After cleaning, the area must be dried completely with a fan.

However, surface cleaning is a temporary fix. Permanent prevention requires addressing the root cause: humidity and lack of air circulation. In a closet, this is exacerbated by stored items insulating the walls. I strongly recommend installing a small battery-operated dehumidifier or a renewable desiccant pack inside the closet. Ensure there is a gap between the wall and any furniture to allow air to circulate. Running a dehumidifier in the room itself is also highly effective.

For a persistent damp smell, the mold may have penetrated the wall board or be growing on the back of the shoe racks themselves, indicating a more serious contamination. UAE regulations, particularly from Dubai Municipality, advise professional assessment for any recurring mold to ensure it is handled safely and effectively, preventing health risks and structural damage.

For a definitive solution and a guarantee that the problem is resolved permanently, a professional inspection and hygienization service is the recommended course of action. Our team at Saniservice can conduct a comprehensive assessment, identify all moisture sources, and perform a certified remediation process.
