How to remove closet mold and who to call in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet in our apartment in Jumeirah Lakes Towers has a really damp, earthy smell that just won't go away. I finally pulled out all the shoes and bags from the back and found a patch of black mold on the wall, and some of my leather items have white, fuzzy spots. I think it's from all the humidity, even with the AC running constantly. What’s the best way to clean this myself and who should I call in Dubai to check for a bigger problem with the building?

That damp, earthy smell you're describing is a classic sign of a mold colony actively growing, and in JLT, the high humidity is a massive contributor, even with AC. What you found is likely Stachybotrys (the black patch) and a common surface mold like Aspergillus (the white fuzz) on the leather.
First, safety: do NOT attempt to clean this without proper PPE. At a minimum, you need an N95 mask, nitrile gloves, and safety goggles. Mold spores become airborne during disturbance and can cause serious respiratory issues. For a small patch (less than 1 sqm), you can try a DIY approach. Mix a solution of 1 part white vinegar to 3 parts water OR a diluted bleach solution (1 part bleach to 10 parts water - ensure excellent ventilation). Scrub the area thoroughly. However, this only addresses the surface. The real issue is the moisture source. In apartments, this is often a hidden plumbing leak within the wall or, more critically, a building envelope issue where external humid air is condensing inside your cold closet wall—a very common problem in Dubai's high-rises. The white mold on your leather goods is a bad sign; it means the humidity level in that enclosed space is critically high. These items need professional hygienization to prevent spore transfer. Honestly, given the description, I strongly recommend a professional inspection. DIY cleaning is a temporary fix. We need to identify the moisture source with tools like thermal imaging cameras and moisture meters. This could be a building issue you need to escalate to your property management. For a proper assessment and remediation quote, you should call our team at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com. We're certified per UAE standards and can provide a full report for your landlord if necessary. Don't let this linger; that smell indicates it's already affecting your indoor air quality. |
