How to remove closet mold in humid Dubai climate?« Back to Previous Page
|
My bedroom closet in our Jumeirah villa has started to get this damp, earthy smell, especially on the leather bags and shoes I stored over the summer. I’ve noticed a few tiny black spots on the back wall behind the clothes rack since the humidity really kicked in last month. What’s the most effective way to treat this and prevent it from coming back next season? Should I be using a dehumidifier in there or is there a specific cleaning product that works best in our climate?

That damp, earthy smell and black spots are classic signs of a mold issue, almost certainly triggered by Dubai's high humidity. The leather items are particularly susceptible as they absorb moisture. The most effective approach is a combination of immediate treatment and addressing the root cause.
First, for the visible mold on the wall, a solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach mixture (one part bleach to four parts water) is effective. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the affected area thoroughly and allow it to dry completely. Discard any items that are extensively contaminated, as mold can penetrate porous materials like leather and fabric. Preventing its return is the critical part. The root cause is excess moisture, likely from humid air condensing in that cool, enclosed space. A dehumidifier is an excellent solution for a closet, especially one storing vulnerable items. Aim to keep the relative humidity below 60%. Also, ensure there is adequate air circulation; leave the closet door ajar occasionally and avoid over-packing items. Check if the closet shares a wall with an AC unit or a bathroom, as this can be a hidden source of moisture. For a persistent smell or if the spots cover a large area (more than a square meter), a professional inspection is recommended. They can identify if there's a hidden leak or condensation issue within the wall cavity and perform air quality testing to confirm the mold type and spore count. This is the only way to be certain the problem is fully resolved, as what you see on the surface is often just a fraction of the growth. |
