How to remove hidden mold in Dubai apartment properly?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading on the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe in Jumeirah. It must have been hidden there for ages. I’m really worried about our health and damaging the apartment. What’s the best way to get rid of this properly without the landlord trying to charge us a fortune for it?

Hidden mold behind furniture is common in Dubai due to high humidity and condensation from year-round AC use. The first step is to move the wardrobe away from the wall to fully assess the spread. If the affected area is larger than one square meter, involves the ceiling, or has a musty odor, professional inspection is strongly advised to identify the species and source.

For smaller areas, you can clean it yourself with proper precautions. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and goggles. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water. Avoid using bleach, as it doesn't prevent regrowth and can damage paint. After cleaning, ensure the area is completely dry. The root cause is often poor airflow. Leave space between furniture and walls and use a dehumidifier to keep bedroom humidity below 60%.

Regarding your landlord, document everything with clear photos and a dated video before you touch it. Under Dubai rental law, the property owner is typically responsible for rectifying issues related to building integrity and maintenance, which includes addressing the moisture source that caused the mold. Present your evidence to the landlord and request they send a professional to fix the leak or infiltration issue and remediate the mold properly. They may attempt to charge you if they believe the damage was caused by tenant negligence, like blocking airflow, so your documentation of the hidden nature is key. For a definitive assessment of responsibility, a professional inspection report from a certified company can provide an unbiased opinion on the cause.
