How to remove mold and prevent humidity in bedroom?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom in our Jumeirah villa has been feeling really humid lately, and I just found a patch of black, fuzzy mold in the corner behind our wardrobe. We run the AC constantly, but with the recent humidity, it feels like it's not enough. What's the most effective way to treat this myself and what kind of dehumidifier should I get to stop it from coming back?

Black mold in a Jumeirah villa bedroom is a clear sign of excess humidity, a common issue here even with constant AC. The AC cools the air but doesn't always remove enough moisture, especially during humid periods. The patch behind the wardrobe is likely due to poor air circulation and a cold surface condensing moisture.

For a small patch (under one square foot), you can treat it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water. Avoid bleach; it doesn't prevent regrowth and can damage porous materials. Dry the area completely immediately after cleaning. However, if the mold covers a larger area, has a strong musty odor, or returns quickly, a professional inspection is strongly recommended to assess potential hidden growth and identify the exact species.

To prevent it from returning, you must address the humidity. A dehumidifier is essential. For a master bedroom, a unit with a capacity of 10-20 litres per day is typically sufficient. Look for one with a built-in hygrometer that allows you to set a target humidity level; aim for 50-55%. Place it centrally, away from walls, and ensure the bedroom door is closed for maximum effectiveness.

Improving air circulation is just as important. Move the wardrobe a few inches away from the wall. Use ceiling fans or a standing fan to keep air moving, which prevents stagnant, humid pockets from forming. Ensure your AC unit is serviced and its filters are clean, as a clogged filter reduces its dehumidifying capacity. For persistent issues, a professional assessment can identify if your AC system itself is a source of moisture or needs recalibration for our climate.
