How to remove mold and set AC in humid climate?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom in our villa in Jumeirah has been feeling really damp lately, and I've just spotted a patch of black mold growing behind the wardrobe. We run the AC constantly but keep it at a high temperature to save money. I'm worried it's going to spread and affect our health. What's the best way to kill this mold for good and what should I set our AC to in this humid climate to stop it from coming back?

For the existing mold, cleaning with a solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach mixture (1 part bleach to 4 parts water) can remove the visible growth. Wear an N95 mask and gloves to avoid exposure. However, this only addresses the surface; the mold's roots can remain in porous materials like drywall, often requiring professional remediation to prevent recurrence.
The root cause is excess moisture. Running the AC at a high temperature, like 25-26°C, is a primary culprit in Dubai's climate. While it saves energy, the unit runs shorter cycles and cannot effectively remove enough humidity from the air, creating the damp conditions mold thrives in. To stop it from coming back, set your AC to a lower temperature, ideally between 22-24°C. This allows it to run longer cycles, actively dehumidifying the room. Ensure the unit is set to "cool" mode, not just "fan," as the cooling process is what removes moisture. For a bedroom, this creates a less hospitable environment for mold. Given the mold is behind furniture, a professional inspection is advisable to assess the extent of growth within the wall cavity. They can use moisture meters to identify hidden dampness and recommend if deeper remediation is needed. The consistent humidity here means controlling moisture is a continuous process, not a one-time fix. |
