How to remove mold behind furniture in humid weather?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading on the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe in Jumeirah Village Circle. It's been really humid lately and I'm worried it's mold. What's the best way to get rid of this properly without having to move all our furniture out for a week?

Move the wardrobe immediately. In Dubai's humidity, that mold is actively growing and spreading spores into your bedroom air. The wall behind it is likely cold from AC, creating condensation that feeds the mold.

For a small area (under one square meter), you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Mix a solution of one part distilled white vinegar with three parts water—bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall and doesn't prevent regrowth. Scrub the area, let the vinegar solution sit for an hour, then wipe dry. Run a dehumidifier or your AC on dry mode in the room for at least 24 hours to remove all moisture from the wall.

However, if the staining covers a larger area or has penetrated deeply, professional remediation is necessary. DIY cleaning often only removes surface discoloration, leaving the root structure intact. A proper remediation will involve isolating the area, removing affected drywall or plaster, and applying antimicrobial solutions to prevent recurrence.

The key is fixing the source. This is almost certainly due to condensation from the temperature difference between the cold wall and the humid room air. After cleaning, improve airflow behind furniture and consider insulating the exterior wall if it's a common issue. For verification that it's fully eradicated, a post-remediation surface swab sent to a microbiology lab for analysis can provide confirmation.
