How to remove mold behind wardrobe and prevent AC spread?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black, fuzzy mold spreading on the wall behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. It’s been incredibly humid the last few weeks and I think the lack of air circulation back there caused it. What's the most effective way to clean this myself, and should I be worried about our AC unit spreading spores throughout the house?

The black mold you've described behind your wardrobe is a common issue in Dubai villas, particularly during periods of high humidity. The lack of air circulation creates a microclimate where condensation forms, providing the perfect breeding ground for mold, often Stachybotrys chartarum (black mold) or Aspergillus niger.

For a small patch (less than 1 square meter), you can attempt remediation yourself. First, isolate the area by sealing the room and closing the AC vents. Don protective gear: an N95 respirator, gloves, and safety goggles. Carefully move the wardrobe. Use a solution of detergent and warm water to scrub the mold off the wall. Avoid bleach, as it does not kill the roots and can release more spores. After cleaning, thoroughly dry the area with fans. Dispose of any porous materials, like damaged drywall or the back panel of the wardrobe, in sealed plastic bags.

You are right to be concerned about your AC unit. Mold spores are microscopic and can easily become aerosolized during cleaning. If these spores are drawn into the AC return air grille, the system can indeed distribute them throughout the entire house, contaminating the ductwork and other rooms.

Given the climate-controlled nature of homes in the UAE and the potential health risks associated with black mold, a professional inspection is strongly advised. Our certified technicians use borescopes to inspect inside wall cavities and air quality tests to check for spore counts and cross-contamination. We can also perform a full hygienization of your AC system to ensure the entire environment is safe.
