How to remove mold behind wardrobe and prevent recurrence?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black spots I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, probably from the humidity these past few months. The wall feels damp and cold to the touch. What's the best way to handle this properly and make sure it doesn't come back?

Black spots behind furniture on a cold, damp wall are a classic sign of condensation mould, extremely common here due to our high humidity and constant AC use creating temperature differentials.

First, move the wardrobe away from the wall to allow air circulation. For cleaning, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Do not dry brush it, as this releases spores. Instead, use a damp cloth with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mould remover to wipe the area. Let the wall dry completely.

However, cleaning only addresses the visible growth. The damp, cold wall indicates an ongoing moisture issue, likely condensation from the temperature difference between the air-conditioned room and the warmer wall. This is why it returns. To prevent recurrence, you must control the humidity and improve air flow. Keep the AC running consistently to dehumidify, ensure furniture is at least two inches from walls, and use a dehumidifier if necessary.

Given the symptoms you describe and the extent of hidden growth (behind furniture for two years), a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can use moisture meters to find the full extent of the dampness and air sampling to identify the mould type, which is important with health symptoms present. Proper remediation involves fixing the moisture source and may require targeted antimicrobial treatment to ensure it doesn’t return.
