How to remove mold behind wardrobe for good?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading along the corner of our bedroom wall, right behind the wardrobe. It’s gotten worse since last week's humidity. I’m worried it's making my allergies act up. What’s the best way to get rid of this mold for good, and should I call a professional cleaning company or is there a DIY solution that actually works here?

Black spots spreading behind furniture during humid periods are a common issue in Dubai due to high condensation levels and year-round AC use. The first step is to move the wardrobe away from the wall to assess the full extent and allow airflow.

For a small, surface-level patch (less than one square meter), a DIY approach can be effective. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold remover, then dry it thoroughly with a fan. However, mold on drywall often penetrates deeply. If it has stained or softened the plasterboard, the affected section likely needs to be cut out and replaced to remove the root structure.

Given its location behind furniture and your allergy symptoms, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can identify the moisture source—often condensation from an AC unit or a small leak—and use moisture meters to confirm the wall is dry. Simply cleaning the surface without fixing the underlying dampness guarantees it will return. Companies with their own microbiology labs can also take a tape-lift sample to identify the species, which helps assess potential health risks and confirms the remediation was successful.

To prevent recurrence, keep the wardrobe at least two inches from the wall to promote air circulation, and ensure your AC is serviced regularly to manage indoor humidity levels effectively.
