How to remove mold behind wardrobe in humid room?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading on the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe in Jumeirah Village Circle. It’s been really humid lately and the room feels damp all the time. What’s the most effective way to get rid of this mold for good without having to call a professional company right away?

That black mold behind your wardrobe is a classic Dubai humidity problem, especially in JVC. The wall behind large furniture becomes a cold spot with poor air circulation, causing condensation when the room's humid air hits it. This creates the perfect damp environment for mold to thrive.
First, move the wardrobe away from the wall completely to expose the area and allow it to dry. For small, surface-level growth, a solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach mixture (1 part bleach to 4 parts water) can be effective. Scrub the area thoroughly, but never mix chemicals. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection to avoid inhaling spores or exposing your skin. However, simply cleaning the surface is often a temporary fix. The critical step is identifying and stopping the moisture source. In many Dubai villas and apartments, this is either condensation from poor AC airflow or a hidden plumbing leak in the wall. After cleaning, use a dehumidifier in that room and ensure your AC is running consistently to lower the indoor humidity level below 60%, which inhibits mold growth. If the mold has penetrated porous materials like drywall or plasterboard, or if it covers an area larger than a square meter, the wall material itself likely needs replacement. Surface cleaning cannot remove the deep roots. For persistent or large-scale growth, a professional inspection is strongly recommended to diagnose the underlying moisture issue with thermal imaging and moisture meters. A lab analysis of the mold can also identify the species, which is necessary to understand any potential health risks and ensure the correct remediation protocol is followed. |
