How to remove mold behind wardrobe in JVC myself?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading on the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe in Jumeirah Village Circle. It must have been hidden there for ages. What’s the best way to get rid of this mold for good, and should I call a professional company or is it something I can handle myself with products from Ace Hardware?

The black spots behind your wardrobe are likely mold, a common issue in JVC due to Dubai's high humidity and the condensation created by year-round AC use. This hidden growth suggests a persistent moisture problem, so simply wiping it away won't be a permanent fix.

For a small area (less than one square meter), you can attempt to clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Move the wardrobe to fully expose the wall. Use a mixture of one part distilled white vinegar to one part water or a diluted bleach solution (one cup of bleach to one gallon of water) to scrub the affected area. Let the solution sit for 10-15 minutes before scrubbing and rinsing with a damp cloth. Thoroughly dry the area with a fan afterward.

However, since this was hidden for a long time, the mold has likely penetrated the porous wall material like paint and plaster. DIY cleaning often only removes surface discoloration, leaving the root structure intact for it to regrow. The critical step is identifying and eliminating the moisture source, which could be a hidden plumbing leak, capillary rising damp, or extreme condensation from the AC unit.

For a recurring or large-scale problem, a professional inspection is recommended. They use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the exact water source and assess the full extent of the growth within the wall cavity. Remediation then involves correcting the moisture issue, removing contaminated materials, and proper containment to prevent spores from spreading to other parts of your home during cleaning. A company with its own microbiology lab can also test to identify the mold species, which informs the correct remediation protocol.
