How to remove mold behind wardrobe without dismantling?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading on the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe in Jumeirah Village Circle. It’s been extra humid lately and I’m worried it’s making my allergies worse. What’s the best way to get rid of this mold for good without having to break down the entire built-in closet?

Black mold growth behind furniture in Jumeirah Village Circle is a common issue due to our high humidity and the condensation that forms on cold exterior walls, especially when airflow is blocked by a large wardrobe.

First, assess the extent. If the area is larger than one square meter, involves structural materials like drywall, or has a persistent musty odor, a professional inspection is strongly recommended to check for hidden moisture and identify the mold species. For smaller, visible patches, you can attempt remediation yourself.

Move the wardrobe away from the wall to allow complete access and airflow. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Wipe the affected area with a microfiber cloth dampened with a mixture of water and a few drops of unscented detergent. Avoid bleach; it only surface-cleans and doesn't address the root cause. After cleaning, thoroughly dry the wall with a fan. The critical step is addressing the moisture source. This is almost always condensation from the temperature difference between the air-conditioned room and the warm exterior wall. Improve air circulation behind the furniture by leaving a small gap. A dehumidifier in the room, especially during the more humid months, can help reduce ambient moisture levels to below 60% RH, which prevents regrowth.

If the mold returns quickly, the moisture issue is likely behind the wall itself, and a professional assessment with a thermal camera and moisture meter is needed to diagnose the hidden problem.
