How to remove mold from a Dubai villa wall?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed black speckles creeping along the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe. It’s an interior wall and the room always feels a bit damp, even with the AC running constantly. I’m really worried about it spreading and causing health issues for my family. What is the most effective way to deal with this kind of mold in Dubai's climate, and should I hire a professional or can I handle it myself with local products?

That black speckling behind your wardrobe is a classic sign of a humidity-related mold issue, very common in Dubai villas. The constant AC can create cold spots on interior walls where warm, humid air condenses, especially behind large furniture blocking airflow.

For a small area (under one square meter), you can attempt cleaning yourself. Use a dedicated mold removal product from a local hardware store, not just bleach. Bleach only removes surface discoloration and does not address the root cause. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and goggles. Scrub the area thoroughly and allow it to dry completely. However, this is only a temporary fix if the moisture source remains.

Given the description—creeping speckles, a consistently damp feel, and its location on an interior wall—this strongly suggests an ongoing condensation problem. In Dubai's climate, DIY cleaning often fails because the underlying humidity issue isn't resolved. The mold will almost certainly return.

The most effective approach is to identify and rectify the moisture source. This requires a professional inspection to assess the wall’s condensation levels, check for possible internal leaks, and evaluate your AC’s performance and humidity control. They can determine if improved insulation, a dehumidifier, or AC serviced to better manage humidity is needed. For remediation, professionals use containment and air scrubbing to prevent spores from spreading to other parts of the house during cleaning.

For permanent results, hiring a company with a microbiology lab is advised. They can identify the mold type and, crucially, provide a verified post-remediation test to confirm the environment is truly dry and the mold is gone, not just wiped away.
