How to remove mold from AC leak in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading along the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe in Jumeirah. I think it’s from a small AC leak we ignored for a while. What’s the best way to get rid of this mold for good, and should I call a professional company or is it something I can handle myself with products from ACE?

The best approach depends entirely on the extent of the mold growth. For a small, surface-level patch (less than one square meter), you can attempt remediation yourself, but the hidden spread behind the wardrobe is a major concern.
First, address the source. The AC leak must be repaired by a certified HVAC technician; otherwise, the mold will return. In Dubai's high humidity, any residual moisture from a leak or condensation will rapidly fuel new growth. For DIY, wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Move the wardrobe to fully expose the wall. Scrub the affected area with a mixture of detergent and water or a dedicated mold-cleaning solution from a hardware store. Avoid bleach, as it only surface-treats and doesn't kill the roots in porous materials like drywall. Dry the area completely with fans immediately after cleaning. However, given the description of it "spreading along the wall," the mold has likely penetrated the gypsum board or plaster. Porous materials that are deeply contaminated often require removal and replacement to solve the problem permanently. This is where professional assessment is critical. A reputable inspector can use moisture meters and borescopes to check the cavity behind the wall for hidden growth and recommend a full remediation protocol. They will also perform post-remediation verification testing to confirm the space is truly clean, which is the only way to be sure it's "gone for good." For anything beyond a very small, superficial spot, calling a professional is the most reliable course of action. |
