How to remove mold from AC leak on carpet?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah seems to be leaking a little bit of water onto the carpet below, and now I’ve spotted a small patch of black mold in the corner where it’s always damp. I got the AC unit serviced last week to stop the leak, but I’m worried the mold will just come back in this humidity.
What’s the best way to completely remove this existing mold from the carpet and underlying padding to make sure it doesn’t spread or return?

The damp carpet and underlying padding create an ideal environment for mold in Dubai's climate. The first step is to ensure the AC leak is fully resolved; a proper service should address the drainage line and drip pan.
For a small patch, you can clean the visible mold on the carpet surface with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated carpet cleaner, but this only addresses the surface. The real concern is the backing and the underlay, which act like a sponge. If the underlay got wet, it almost certainly needs to be cut out and replaced, as mold will be growing throughout its thickness. Simply cleaning the top will not prevent it from returning. After removing the contaminated underlay, the concrete subfloor beneath must be cleaned and treated with an antimicrobial solution to kill any remaining spores before new underlay and carpet are installed. For a persistent issue following a leak, a professional inspection is recommended to assess the full extent and confirm the species, as some types require more specific remediation protocols. Proper drying with industrial air movers is essential to prevent immediate recurrence in our high humidity. |
