How to remove mold from bathroom ceiling in Dubai apartment?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah apartment for 2 years and just noticed this ugly black and green mold growing along the ceiling in the corner above the shower. It’s been really humid lately and the bathroom window is always closed because it just opens to the building’s service corridor. What’s the best way to clean this myself, or do I need to get my building management involved for something like this?

As a certified mold remediation specialist operating in Dubai, the issue you're describing is extremely common in the UAE's climate. The persistent high humidity, especially during summer, combined with hot showers and inadequate ventilation, creates a perfect environment for mold growth. The fact that your bathroom window opens to a service corridor, which likely has limited air flow, exacerbates the problem by trapping moist air inside.

For a small, surface-level patch (less than 1 square meter), you can attempt to clean it yourself. I recommend using a solution of diluted white vinegar or a proprietary mold remover from a local hardware store. Always wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Scrub the area thoroughly, ensuring you address the root cause by improving ventilation. Run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and consider using a dehumidifier.

However, the appearance of black and green mold on the ceiling is a significant concern. This suggests persistent moisture, potentially from a leak in the plumbing stack or condensation within the AC ducting above the ceiling. Surface cleaning will only provide a temporary cosmetic fix if there is a hidden moisture source. In such cases, a professional inspection is strongly advised to identify the true extent and source.

Furthermore, according to common Dubai tenancy laws and building regulations, structural issues like potential leaks from central AC systems or building infrastructure are typically the responsibility of the building management or owner. We strongly recommend you report this to them immediately and request an investigation.

For a definitive assessment and safe, guaranteed remediation, our team at Saniservice can perform a comprehensive inspection, including moisture mapping and air quality testing, to identify the exact species and root cause.
