How to remove mold from closet and health risks?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for two years and just noticed a patch of black, fuzzy mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It's been incredibly humid the last few weeks and I'm worried it's spread behind the shelving. What's the most effective way to clean this ourselves, and should we be concerned about our health from breathing it in?

The black fuzzy patch is likely Cladosporium or Aspergillus, both common in Dubai's high humidity. These molds can cause nasal congestion, throat irritation, and worsen allergies or asthma, especially for those with sensitivities. Health effects depend on exposure duration and individual susceptibility.
For a small patch under 1 square meter, you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Mix a solution of 1 part white vinegar to 1 part water or a diluted bleach solution (1 cup bleach to 1 gallon of water) and scrub the area thoroughly. Do not mix vinegar and bleach. Dry the area completely with a fan afterward. Discard any porous items like cardboard boxes that show mold growth. The root cause is almost certainly excess moisture. In Jumeirah villas, this often stems from condensation from uninsulated exterior walls or a small hidden leak. Simply wiping the surface mold will not stop it from returning if the moisture source remains. Move your winter clothes and inspect the wall and floor behind the shelving for further growth or water staining. Given the UAE's climate and the mold's location in a closet, a professional inspection is strongly recommended to identify the hidden moisture source. They use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find condensation points within walls that are not visible. Without addressing this, the mold will almost certainly recur. For health reassurance, a lab test can identify the species, which is important if anyone in the home experiences persistent respiratory issues. |
