How to remove mold from closet and prevent moisture?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet on the inside wall has started showing black speckles on the leather bags and shoes I stored there. I just pulled everything out and found a patch of mold on the wall itself, which is really worrying. We've lived in this Marina apartment for 2 years and just noticed this now, especially after the recent humid spell. What’s the best way to clean this safely and what can I do to stop the moisture from coming back through that wall?

The mold growth in your closet is a serious concern, particularly given the construction and climate of Dubai Marina apartments. The black speckles on your leather goods are a classic indicator of a active mold colony, and its presence on the structural wall suggests a persistent moisture issue. The recent humid weather has likely exacerbated an existing problem.

For immediate, safe cleaning, personal protection is paramount. Wear an N95 mask, nitrile gloves, and eye protection. Isolate the area by closing the closet doors and sealing the gap with tape to prevent spore dispersal. For non-porous surfaces like the wall, a solution of detergent and water can be used for scrubbing. However, porous materials like leather bags and shoes are extremely difficult to decontamate effectively and may need to be professionally cleaned or discarded.

The critical step is identifying and rectifying the moisture source. In a sealed Marina high-rise, the most probable cause is interstitial condensation due to the thermal bridging between the cold interior air from your AC and the warm, humid exterior air penetrating the wall. This creates a perfect environment for mold within the wall cavity. Simply cleaning the surface will result in rapid regrowth.

A professional inspection is strongly recommended. We use thermal imaging cameras and moisture meters to pinpoint the exact condensation points and assess the extent of hidden growth within the wall. Remediation involves addressing the humidity through enhanced ventilation, potentially applying anti-microbial coatings, and sealing the wall to prevent moisture migration, in compliance with Dubai Municipality's public health regulations.

To prevent recurrence, ensure your AC is running consistently to control humidity, consider using a dehumidifier, and avoid placing items directly against external walls.
