How to remove mold from closet and prevent recurrence?« Back to Previous Page

Our 5-year-old has been having a persistent cough and my allergies have been awful since the weather got more humid a few weeks back. I just pulled out a few winter blankets from the bottom of the wardrobe in our master bedroom and found a bunch of them covered in black fuzzy spots. I'm really worried this is making us sick. How do I properly clean the mold out of the closet and stop it from coming back?

Mold in wardrobes is very common in Dubai due to high humidity, especially during seasonal shifts when condensation forms on cooler interior surfaces. The black spots are likely a common type like Cladosporium or Aspergillus, which can absolutely trigger the symptoms you're describing.

For cleaning, move all affected items outside immediately to prevent spore dispersal. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. For hard surfaces inside the closet, scrub with a solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach mix (1 part bleach to 10 parts water), but ensure the room is extremely well-ventilated. The moldy blankets are a significant source of spores; laundering them at a high temperature with a mold-killing additive may not be sufficient, and replacement is often the safer option for porous materials.

Preventing recurrence requires controlling the environment. Mold needs moisture, so identify the source. In closets on external walls, this is often condensation from the temperature difference between the air-conditioned room and the humid outside air. Leave some space between the wall and your belongings for air circulation. A small renewable desiccant dehumidifier, like those containing silica gel, placed inside the closet can help measurably reduce moisture levels.

Given the health symptoms and the extent of the growth you've found, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They can use moisture meters to find hidden dampness and air testing to identify the spore types and concentrations in your bedroom, which is crucial for effective remediation and confirming the root cause is addressed.
