How to remove mold from clothes in humid weather?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for two years and just noticed a bunch of black spots in the back of the wardrobe where we store our winter clothes. It's been so humid lately, and I'm worried it's spread to the clothes themselves. What's the most effective way to get rid of this mold for good without ruining all our stuff?

First, remove the affected clothes from the wardrobe immediately to prevent further spread. For washable fabrics, a hot water wash (at least 60°C) with a mould-killing additive like white vinegar or baking soda is effective. Sun-drying them thoroughly in direct sunlight is crucial, as UV rays help kill remaining spores. For dry-clean-only items, consult a professional cleaner and inform them of the mould issue.
The root cause is the high humidity inside that enclosed space. In Dubai's climate, wardboards against external walls are prone to condensation from the constant battle between outdoor heat and indoor AC, creating a perfect breeding ground. Simply cleaning the clothes won't prevent it from returning. You must address the source. Empty the wardrobe completely. Wash the interior with a solution of one part water to one part white vinegar or a diluted bleach solution (ensure good ventilation), scrubbing the affected areas. Then, thoroughly dry the interior. To prevent recurrence, improve air circulation. Leave the wardrobe doors ajar occasionally and consider using a moisture absorber like silica gel packs or a small, portable dehumidifier inside the space. For valuable or delicate items, or if the mould growth is extensive and has deeply penetrated the fabrics, a professional inspection and cleaning service is recommended. They can assess the damage with tools like moisture meters and provide targeted cleaning, such as ozone treatment, which can eradicate odours and spores without damaging materials. The key to a permanent solution is controlling the moisture source within the storage area itself. |
