How to remove mold from Dubai villa wardrobe and prevent it?« Back to Previous Page

Our family villa in Jumeirah has been feeling really humid lately, and I’ve just found patches of black and green mold in the back of the walk-in wardrobe where we store our winter clothes. It must have been growing since the weather got hotter and we started blasting the AC non-stop. What’s the most effective way to clean this ourselves, and is there a specific local product we should use to stop it from coming back?

The most effective DIY method starts with safety: wear an N95 mask and gloves to avoid inhaling spores or skin contact. For the cleaning solution, mix one part distilled white vinegar with one part water in a spray bottle. Vinegar is effective against most common moulds and is readily available here. Spray the affected area thoroughly until damp, let it sit for an hour, then scrub with a stiff brush. Wipe clean with a damp cloth and allow the area to dry completely.
To prevent it from returning, you must address the humidity. A villa in Jumeirah is prone to high ambient moisture, and a closed, poorly ventilated wardrobe creates a perfect breeding ground. After cleaning, place a rechargeable desiccant dehumidifier inside the wardrobe; these are sold at most major hardware stores and are essential here. Also, avoid overfilling the closet to allow for air circulation and leave the door ajar periodically. While DIY can handle small surface patches, the mould you describe suggests a persistent humidity issue. The constant AC use creates a significant temperature differential between the cooled room and the warmer wall, leading to condensation inside the wall cavity—this is a very common issue in Dubai. If the mould covers more than a square meter, has a strong musty odour, or returns quickly after cleaning, a professional inspection is recommended to check for hidden growth within the wall itself and identify the exact moisture source. |
