How to remove mold from items and fix AC leak?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my master bedroom closet has been leaking a little, and now I’ve found black spots on a few of my handbags and shoes stored in there. It’s been humid for the past month and the smell is getting really musty. What’s the best way to clean this mold off leather and fabric items properly to save them, and how can I stop the AC unit from causing this again?

The black spots and musty odor you're describing are clear indicators of active mold growth, a common issue in Dubai due to our high humidity levels and the year-round reliance on AC systems. The AC leak has created a perfect microclimate for mold by providing both moisture and condensation.

For your personal items, immediate action is critical. For leather goods, use a soft brush to remove dry spores outdoors. Then, wipe the surface with a solution of 70% isopropyl alcohol and 30% distilled water, testing on an inconspicuous area first. Allow it to dry completely away from direct sunlight. For fabric items, a professional-grade antimicrobial cleaner is recommended, as household products often fail to kill the root structure and can cause staining. Do not attempt to clean severely affected items yourself, as improper handling can aerosolize spores and spread the contamination.

The root cause is the AC leak. This requires a two-step professional approach. First, a certified mold inspector must conduct air and surface sampling to identify the species and extent of the growth within the closet and the AC unit itself, as per UAE health and safety guidelines. Second, an HVAC technician must repair the condensate drain line or pan leak to prevent recurrence.

Simply cleaning the visible mold without addressing the hidden growth in the AC system and the moisture source will lead to rapid regrowth. For a proper assessment and safe remediation that protects your health and property, I strongly recommend a professional inspection. Contact our team at Saniservice for a comprehensive evaluation.
