How to remove mold from wall behind sofa?« Back to Previous Page

The wall behind our sofa in the living room has these blackish-green splotches that we never noticed before. It’s been spreading since the weather got more humid last month, and now the whole corner just smells like damp earth. What’s the best way to deal with this ourselves before we have to call a professional?

That pattern and smell indicate active mold growth, likely due to condensation buildup behind the sofa where air doesn't circulate. In Dubai's climate, this is common on exterior walls where cool indoor air meets the hot outside surface, creating a perfect damp environment for mold.

For a small area (under one square meter), you can clean it yourself. Move the sofa away from the wall to allow the area to dry completely. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the affected area with a mixture of white vinegar and water or a dedicated mold-cleaning solution; avoid bleach as it often only removes the color and not the root structure. Let the solution sit for an hour before wiping and drying thoroughly.

However, if the mold has penetrated porous materials like drywall or the affected area is large, scrubbing the surface won't address the colony inside the wall. The damp earth smell suggests it may be more extensive than it looks. In such cases, professional inspection is needed to assess the wall cavity's condition and identify the moisture source, as DIY cleaning will only be temporary. For rental properties, note that Dubai Municipality regulations often hold the landlord responsible for resolving structural dampness issues.
