How to remove mold from wall in humid Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of small black spots forming in the corner of our master bedroom closet, right on the wall. It’s been so humid lately that I’m worried it’s spreading. What’s the best way to deal with mold on a wall here in Dubai, and should I call maintenance or try to clean it myself first?

Small black spots in a closet corner are a common sign of surface mold, often triggered by Dubai's high humidity and condensation from AC units. For a small area (under one square meter), you can clean it yourself safely.
Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water or a diluted bleach solution (follow product instructions carefully). Scrub the area with a stiff brush, then wipe it down with a damp cloth and allow it to dry completely. Ensure the room is well-ventilated during and after the process. The critical step is addressing the moisture source. In closets, this is frequently poor air circulation. Leave closet doors ajar and ensure vents are not blocked to allow conditioned air to flow. A small desiccant dehumidifier inside the closet can help maintain lower humidity levels. If the mold returns quickly, covers a larger area, or you detect a musty odor, it's time for a professional assessment. Recurrence indicates a hidden moisture issue within the wall or a more extensive problem. In such cases, a proper inspection, including moisture mapping and possibly air or surface sampling for lab analysis, is needed to identify the species and the full extent of the contamination. For tenants, report persistent issues to your building maintenance; they are typically responsible for the building envelope. |
