How to remove mold from wardrobe and prevent it in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed black speckles growing on the back of our bedroom wardrobe, which is on the wall facing the outside. It's been incredibly humid the last few weeks and I'm worried the AC isn't keeping up. What's the best way to clean this off and are there any specific dehumidifiers or moisture absorbers that actually work in Dubai's climate to stop it from coming back?

Clean the visible mould with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mould remover, wearing an N95 mask and gloves. Wipe the area thoroughly and allow it to dry completely. For porous surfaces like wood, scrubbing may only remove surface growth.
The root cause is excess moisture, likely from condensation due to the high humidity and the temperature difference between your air-conditioned room and the hot external wall. To prevent recurrence, improve air circulation around the wardrobe by moving it slightly away from the wall. Ensure your AC is set to a consistently cool temperature, as fluctuating settings can cause more condensation. Running the AC's dry mode for a few hours daily can help reduce indoor humidity levels. For moisture control, desiccant dehumidifiers are generally more effective than refrigerant models in Dubai's climate, especially in cooler AC spaces. Look for units with a built-in humidistat. Disposable moisture absorber boxes can also be effective in enclosed spaces like wardrobes. If the mould growth is extensive, has a strong musty odor, or returns quickly after cleaning, the issue may be within the wall itself. In such cases, a professional inspection with moisture meters and thermal imaging can identify hidden dampness and the exact source of the water intrusion. |
