How to remove mold in closet and prevent it?« Back to Previous Page
|
Our master bedroom walk-in closet has developed a persistent damp, moldy smell over the past few weeks, and I finally found black spots growing on the back wall and on a few of our leather bags. We live in a villa in Jumeirah and I'm worried it's because the AC vent in there is too small and doesn't get enough airflow, especially with the recent humidity. What is the most effective way to clean this safely and what can I do to the room or AC to stop it from coming back?

The persistent mold issue you're describing in your Jumeirah villa is a classic symptom of the Dubai climate, where high humidity and continuous AC operation create significant condensation risks. The black spots on the wall and leather are likely Stachybotrys or Cladosporium, which thrive in the stagnant, humid conditions of an under-ventilated closet.
For safe removal, do not attempt to clean it with bleach, as this can exacerbate spore release and is ineffective on porous surfaces. Begin by isolating the area. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. For non-porous walls, a solution of detergent and warm water can be used to scrub the visible growth. However, for porous materials like drywall or the leather bags, professional cleaning is almost always required, as the mold penetrates deep into the material. The AC vent is a critical factor; the small size restricts airflow, allowing humidity to accumulate. This is a common HVAC design flaw in many villas. To prevent recurrence, you must address the humidity source. First, have your AC system inspected by a certified HVAC technician to ensure it is correctly balanced and that the closet vent is providing adequate CFM (cubic feet per minute) of airflow. Consider installing a standalone dehumidifier in the room during the more humid winter months. Keep the closet less crowded to promote air circulation and regularly inspect for condensation. Given the extent of the growth and the potential for hidden contamination within the wall cavity or AC ductwork, a professional inspection is strongly advised. We at Saniservice utilize moisture meters, thermal imaging, and air quality tests to identify the full scope of the problem and execute a certified remediation protocol that complies with Dubai Municipality's health and safety standards.
