How to remove mold in Dubai villa's humid climate?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black, fuzzy spots spreading on the back of our bedroom wardrobe. It's on the wall that faces the outside of the building, and we're in a Jumeirah villa. I'm worried it's been there a while and might be why my allergies have been so bad lately.
What's the most effective way to deal with this kind of mold in Dubai's climate, and should I call a professional company or try to clean it myself first?

The black, fuzzy growth on your wardrobe's exterior wall is a classic symptom of condensation in Dubai's climate. The wall is likely a "cold bridge," where the indoor cool air from your AC meets the hot, humid outdoor air, creating persistent dampness that mold thrives on.
For a small area (under one square meter), you can attempt cleaning yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a mixture of white vinegar or a dedicated mold remover, then wipe dry. However, since the mold is on a porous surface like drywall and has likely penetrated it, cleaning the surface may not be sufficient. The root cause is the moisture. Given your allergy symptoms and the location, a professional assessment is strongly recommended. They will identify the exact moisture source—whether it's condensation, a hidden pipe leak, or water ingress—and the mold species. In villas, this often requires addressing insulation on the exterior wall and improving ventilation to break the condensation cycle. DIY cleaning without solving the humidity problem will lead to its swift return. A proper remediation includes containment to prevent spores from spreading to other parts of the house during removal, which is crucial for your allergy concerns. |
