How to remove recurring black mold from shower grout?« Back to Previous Page
|
The grout between the tiles in my master bathroom shower has been turning black over the last few months, and no matter how much I scrub with bleach, it keeps coming back. I live in a Jumeirah apartment and the bathroom has no window, so it’s always a bit humid. Is this something I can fix myself with a specific product, or do I need to call a professional cleaning company to handle it?

Recurring black mold in shower grout is common in Dubai, especially in windowless bathrooms like yours in Jumeirah. The high humidity and condensation create a perfect environment for it to thrive. Bleach only bleaches the surface mold you can see; it doesn't kill the roots embedded deep in the porous grout, which is why it keeps returning.
For a DIY approach, stop using bleach. Instead, use a dedicated fungicidal cleaner specifically designed for mold removal on grout. Look for products containing chlorine dioxide or hydrogen peroxide. Apply it generously, let it soak for the recommended time (often 10-15 minutes), and scrub with a stiff brush. This is more effective than bleach but may still be temporary if the underlying moisture issue isn't addressed. The core of the problem is ventilation. After every shower, run the exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes to remove humid air. If your fan is weak or broken, have it replaced. Wiping down the shower walls and squeegeeing water off the tiles after use also helps significantly reduce lingering moisture. If the mold recurs after proper cleaning and improved ventilation, the infestation is likely deep within the grout or possibly behind the tiles. At this point, professional assessment is needed. A certified inspector can use moisture meters to check for hidden dampness and take tape-lift samples for lab analysis to confirm the mold type. In many cases, the only permanent solution is to remove and replace the compromised grout in a controlled manner to prevent spreading spores, then reseal it with a high-quality, mold-resistant sealant. For extensive or recurring issues, this diagnostic approach is the most reliable path to a long-term fix. |
