How to remove recurring black mold in Dubai closet?« Back to Previous Page
|
Our bedroom closet in our Mirdif villa has had this damp, earthy smell since the humidity really spiked a few weeks ago. I finally pulled everything out and found a bunch of black fuzzy spots all over the back wall and on some of our winter jackets. We’ve tried wiping it with vinegar, but it just seems to come back. Is this something I can handle myself with a good cleaner, or should I call a professional, and what’s the typical cost for a small area like a closet?

Black mold recurrence in a Dubai closet is almost always a sign of an unresolved moisture source. The high ambient humidity, combined with a lack of air circulation behind clothes, creates a perfect breeding ground. Wiping with vinegar only addresses surface spores and will not stop it from returning if the wall itself is damp.
First, identify and stop the moisture. The most common causes here are condensation from an adjacent cold AC duct running inside the wall or, in villas, capillary rise of moisture from the ground (rising damp) through the concrete. Check if the wall feels cold or damp to the touch. For condensation, improving closet ventilation is key; leave the door ajar periodically and ensure the room’s AC is effectively dehumidifying. For suspected rising damp, a professional assessment is necessary to diagnose the building integrity issue. For removal, scrubbing with a dedicated mold remover is more effective than vinegar for porous surfaces like concrete and drywall. However, if the mold has penetrated deeply or covers more than a few square feet, DIY cleaning often disturbs spores and spreads them without fully eradicating the root system within the material. Professional remediation for a closet-sized area is a common and relatively small-scale job. The cost is typically moderate and is driven by the need for proper containment, HEPA vacuuming, antimicrobial treatment, and most critically, identifying the moisture source with tools like thermal imaging and moisture meters. They can also advise if the wall material itself needs to be replaced. Always request a post-remediation verification test from an independent lab to confirm the space is truly clear before you repopulate it with your belongings. |
