How to remove toxic black mold from shower grout?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah apartment for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading along the grout on the ceiling above our shower. It’s been super humid lately even with the AC on. What’s the most effective way to get rid of this for good, and should I be worried about it being toxic black mold?

The black spots are likely mildew or common bathroom mould, not necessarily the infamous "toxic black mold" (Stachybotrys), which is rarer. Dubai's high humidity and constant AC use create ideal conditions for it, as AC units often dehumidify less effectively during our humid summers, leading to condensation in bathrooms.
For removal, start by scrubbing the grout with a dedicated mould remover or a paste of baking soda and white vinegar. For persistent growth, a diluted bleach solution (1 part bleach to 4 parts water) can be effective—ensure the room is well-ventilated. The key is not just to clean but to dry the area thoroughly after every shower; using an exhaust fan for 30 minutes afterwards makes a significant difference. If the mould returns quickly, spreads behind tiles, or if you experience persistent musty smells or health symptoms like unexplained congestion, a professional inspection is warranted. They can take samples for lab analysis to confirm the species, which is the only way to know if it's a more concerning type. This is a common issue in UAE apartments where hidden ventilation problems or minor leaks behind walls can be the real cause. |
