How to reseal shower to prevent mold from returning?« Back to Previous Page

My bathroom in our Jumeirah apartment has had this musty smell for weeks, especially after a hot day. I finally pulled back the silicone sealant around the shower and found a bunch of black spots lurking underneath. We run the exhaust fan during showers, but the humidity here is just relentless. What’s the most effective way to reseal it to prevent the mold from coming straight back?

The most effective way to reseal your shower starts with complete removal of the old, contaminated sealant. Simply cleaning the surface or sealing over the mold will trap it, and it will return quickly. You must cut out all the old silicone, as the mold's root system (hyphae) will have penetrated deep into the material.

Once removed, the underlying groove must be absolutely clean, dry, and treated. Scrub the area with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold-cleaning product to kill any remaining spores. Critically, the area must be bone-dry for at least 24 hours before applying new sealant; use a hairdryer on a cool setting to help in Dubai's humid climate. Any residual moisture will fuel new growth.

Choose a high-quality, 100% silicone sealant labeled as "mold-resistant" or "fungistatic." Avoid acrylic or siliconized acrylic products, as they are less effective in high-humidity environments. For a lasting seal, apply the new bead smoothly and evenly, using a tool or your finger dipped in soapy water to create a concave finish that sheds water.

Even with perfect application, the relentless humidity here means mold can recur on the surface. Consistent ventilation is non-negotiable. Run your exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and consider a small desiccant dehumidifier for the room. If the mold was extensive behind the sealant or you suspect it has spread into the wall, a professional inspection with moisture mapping can identify hidden problems that DIY efforts can't solve.
