How to safely and permanently remove mold from bedroom wall?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the mold I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed it when we moved the furniture to rearrange. The wall feels damp and the black spots are spreading up towards the ceiling. What's the best way to treat this safely and permanently so it doesn't come back after the next humid season?

The damp wall and spreading black spots indicate an active moisture source, likely from condensation due to our high humidity or a hidden leak. For the safety of your kids, the priority is identifying and stopping that moisture first; otherwise, any removal is temporary.

Safely treating this requires containment. Do not dry brush or vacuum the mold, as this aerosolizes spores. For a small area, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub with a mixture of detergent and water, then wipe with a diluted bleach solution (1 part bleach to 10 parts water). Allow the area to dry completely. However, given the description of it spreading up the wall and the persistent dampness, this is likely a more serious case.

Permanent removal requires professional assessment. The wall cavity may be affected, which you cannot see. In Dubai’s climate, this often stems from thermal bridging (where a cold AC wall meets warm, humid air) or a leak from a pipe or AC condensate drain. A proper inspection uses moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the exact source. Remediation involves removing contaminated drywall or plaster, treating the substructure, and ensuring the area is sealed and dried to a specific moisture content before rebuilding. This is the only way to prevent its return after the next humid season. Given the health symptoms, a professional inspection is strongly advised to assess the full extent and provide a permanent solution.
