How to safely clean AC mold in Dubai bedroom?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our bedroom in Al Barsha seems to be leaking a little bit of water, and now I've just spotted a patch of black mold on the wall behind the curtain. It’s been super humid lately, so I think that made it worse. What's the safest and fastest way to clean this myself, or should I call my building management first?

Stop using the AC immediately and address the moisture source first. The leak is feeding the mold. In Dubai's high humidity, any damp spot can develop mold within 48 hours.

For a small patch (under one square foot), you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. A solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach mixture (1 part bleach to 10 parts water) is effective. Scrub the area thoroughly, let the solution sit for 15 minutes, then wipe it dry. Ensure the room is well-ventilated during the process.

However, since the mold is linked to an AC leak, the root cause must be fixed. Contact your building management first; they are typically responsible for the AC unit and its drainage system under Dubai's common tenancy and strata laws. Simply cleaning the visible mold is a temporary fix if the leak persists. The internal drip pan or condensate drain line is likely clogged, a frequent issue here due to dust and year-round AC use.

If the mold patch is large, has a musty odor, or returns after cleaning, a professional inspection is advised. They can use moisture meters to find hidden dampness and air sampling to identify the spore types, which is crucial if anyone in the household has respiratory sensitivities.
