How to safely clean and prevent black mold in closet?« Back to Previous Page

We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed a few small black spots in the corner of our master bedroom closet on the exterior wall. I’m really worried it’s black mold, especially with the humidity starting to rise again. What’s the best way to clean this safely and prevent it from coming back for good?

The small black spots you've described are a common issue in Dubai, particularly in enclosed spaces like closets on exterior walls. This is often caused by a combination of our high ambient humidity and the significant temperature differential between the air-conditioned interior and the hot exterior wall, leading to condensation and mold growth. While often referred to as "black mold," proper identification requires professional testing, as many dark-colored molds are not the infamous Stachybotrys.

For a small, isolated area (less than 1 square meter), you can address it cautiously. First, ensure personal protection: wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Isolate the area by closing the closet door and sealing the bottom with tape to prevent spore dispersal. Mix a solution of one part detergent-free household bleach to four parts water. Lightly mist the area to suppress spores, then scrub the spots with the solution using a stiff brush. Wipe clean with a damp cloth and allow the area to dry completely. Do not mix bleach with ammonia-based cleaners.

However, the critical step is addressing the moisture source to prevent recurrence. This is the core challenge in our climate. Ensure your AC is serviced and draining properly, as clogged drain pans are a primary cause. Consider using a small renewable desiccant dehumidifier inside the closet. Improve air circulation by not overpacking the closet and occasionally leaving the door ajar. For exterior walls, inspect the building's external sealant and cladding for breaches that may allow humid air ingress.

For a confirmed, persistent, or large-scale problem, professional inspection and remediation are mandatory. DIY efforts can inadvertently spread spores. Our company, Saniservice, conducts certified mold inspections, including air and surface sampling to identify the species and concentration, which dictates the correct remediation protocol as per international standards. We then implement engineering controls to solve the underlying humidity issue permanently.
