How to safely clean and prevent closet mold in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed some black speckles forming in the corners of our master bedroom closet in Jumeirah. It's the wall that faces the outside, and I'm worried the humidity is getting trapped in there, especially since we keep the door closed. What's the most effective way to clean this safely and prevent it from coming back for good?

Based on the description of black speckles on an exterior wall in Jumeirah, this is a classic case of surface mold growth due to condensation and high humidity, a very common issue in Dubai. The closed closet door creates a stagnant air pocket with minimal air conditioning circulation, allowing moisture from the humid outdoor air penetrating the wall to condense and promote mold growth.

For safe cleaning, personal protection is critical. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Isolate the area by closing the closet door and placing a towel at the base. Do not attempt to dry brush or vacuum the mold, as this will aerosolize spores. Instead, prepare a solution of warm water with a few drops of mild detergent or, for a stronger option, a diluted white vinegar mix. Dampen a microfibre cloth (do not oversaturate the wall) and gently wipe the affected area. Dispose of the cloth immediately in a sealed bag.

Prevention is the most crucial step. The root cause is humidity and lack of air movement. To prevent recurrence, you must increase ventilation. Leave the closet door ajar regularly and consider installing louvered doors or ventilation grilles. Use a portable dehumidifier or silica gel desiccant packs inside the closet. Ensure your AC is serviced and functioning correctly to manage indoor humidity levels year-round, as mandated by Dubai's high-performance building standards.

For a persistent issue on an exterior wall, the problem may be more serious, such as a hidden leak or insufficient insulation, allowing thermal bridging and condensation. In such cases, a professional inspection is strongly advised to identify the exact moisture source and assess the extent of growth. Our certified inspectors at Saniservice use thermal imaging and moisture meters for a precise diagnosis.
