How to safely clean bathroom mold affecting my family's health?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing more than usual, and I've just spotted these small black patches of mold growing along the ceiling above our shower in our Jumeirah villa. The bathroom doesn't have a window, and even with the exhaust fan running, it always feels damp for hours. What's the safest and most effective way to clean this to make sure it's not affecting my family's health?

Black mould in bathrooms is common in Dubai due to high humidity and poor ventilation, and it can definitely irritate airways, causing the coughing you've described. For the small patches you see, a solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach mixture (1 part bleach to 10 parts water) can be effective. Wear an N95 mask and gloves, scrub the area, and let it dry completely. The key is to address the moisture source.

Your windowless bathroom will always struggle. Run the exhaust fan for at least 30-60 minutes after every shower and wipe down wet walls and ceilings with a squeegee. Consider adding a portable dehumidifier to run for a few hours daily to pull excess moisture from the air.

If the mould covers an area larger than a square meter, has a persistent musty odour, or the coughing persists after your cleaning efforts, professional assessment is advised. Visible mould on the ceiling can indicate a larger colony within the ceiling void, especially if there's an AC duct running above it. A certified inspector can use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find hidden dampness and take air or tape-lift samples for lab analysis to identify the species and confirm it's the source of the irritation. Remediation then focuses on fixing the humidity issue and safely removing the contaminated materials.
