How to safely clean bedroom mold and prevent AC spread?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black, fuzzy mold on the wall behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom in Jumeirah. It's been incredibly humid the last few weeks and I think the lack of airflow back there caused it. What's the safest and most effective way to clean this myself, and should I be worried about my AC unit spreading spores?

Your situation is common in Dubai, especially during humid periods when stagnant air allows condensation to form on cooler walls. For a patch smaller than one square meter, you can clean it safely yourself. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water, then disinfect with a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water. Avoid bleach, as it doesn't prevent regrowth and can damage porous surfaces like drywall.

The AC unit is a valid concern, as it can circulate spores. Before cleaning, cover the AC vent in that room with plastic sheeting and tape to contain the area. After cleaning the wall, it is prudent to have your AC system inspected. Mold growth in a bedroom often indicates high humidity levels that the AC is not adequately controlling. A professional can check the unit’s drainage, coils, and ductwork for any colonization and ensure it is effectively dehumidifying your space.

To prevent recurrence, move the wardrobe a few inches from the wall to improve airflow. Consider using a small desiccant dehumidifier in the room, as Dubai’s climate often keeps indoor humidity above the recommended 50-60%. If the mold returns quickly, the wall may be wet from a hidden leak or the problem may be more extensive, warranting a professional inspection to identify and resolve the underlying moisture source.
