How to safely clean black mold from bedroom myself?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past two weeks, and I just found a patch of black, fuzzy mold behind their bedroom wardrobe. We live in an older villa in Al Barsha, and I’m worried the high humidity from the AC might be making it worse. How do I safely clean this myself without putting my family at risk?

First, isolate the area. Keep children and pets out of the room and close the door. Open a window if possible for ventilation. Wear an N95 mask, goggles, and disposable gloves to prevent inhaling spores or skin contact.

For a small patch (under one square foot), mix a solution of one part distilled white vinegar to four parts water in a spray bottle. Avoid bleach; it only removes surface colour and can release harmful fumes, especially in a poorly ventilated space. Spray the mould patch thoroughly, let the vinegar solution sit for an hour, then scrub with a stiff-bristled brush. Wipe the area clean with disposable cloths and seal all cleaning waste in a plastic bag before disposal.

In Dubai's climate, simply cleaning the spot is a temporary fix. The black mould behind the wardrobe is a symptom of high humidity and condensation, likely from your AC system creating a cold surface against a warmer wall. This is a common issue in older villas in areas like Al Barsha. After cleaning, use a dehumidifier or run your AC continuously on a dry setting to keep indoor humidity below 60%, which is critical to prevent its return.

If the mould covers a larger area (more than ~10 square feet), if it returns quickly after cleaning, or if anyone in the household has persistent respiratory issues, professional assessment is strongly advised. DIY cleaning can aerosolize toxins without addressing the root moisture problem. A proper inspection includes moisture mapping to find the hidden source and air/o-surface sampling to identify the mould species, as some types require more stringent containment protocols.
