How to safely clean black mold from kids' bedroom?« Back to Previous Page
|
My kids have been coughing more than usual, and I’m worried it’s from the black spots I just found behind their bedroom wardrobe. We’ve lived in this Jumeirah villa for years, but I think the problem started after that really humid spell we had last month. What’s the safest way for me to clean this myself without making the air quality worse for them?

Seeing those black spots behind the wardrobe is definitely a cause for concern, especially with the kids coughing. The humidity last month was a major trigger; it creates the perfect breeding ground for mold here in Dubai.
For a small patch (less than 1 square foot), you can attempt a careful DIY clean. However, SAFETY FIRST. Your kids should NOT be in the room during this process. You MUST wear an N95 mask, goggles, and rubber gloves. Move the wardrobe away from the wall. Mix a solution of 4 parts water to 1 part white vinegar. DO NOT USE BLEACH. Bleach doesn't kill mold roots on porous surfaces and its fumes are terrible for air quality, potentially making the coughing worse. Lightly mist the area with the vinegar solution to prevent spores from becoming airborne, then scrub with a stiff brush. Dry the area immediately and thoroughly with a fan afterwards. Moisture is the enemy. Honestly, because this is in your children's bedroom and you're already seeing health symptoms, I strongly advise against a full DIY approach. Disturbing the mold can aerosolize spores, significantly worsening the indoor air quality. What you see on the surface is often just the tip of the iceberg; the root system can be deep within the wall. For your family's health, a professional inspection is the safest bet. We use thermal imaging and moisture meters to find the source of the moisture and assess the true extent. We can then safely contain and remediate it to Dubai Municipality standards.
