How to safely clean black mold from shower ceiling?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold growing in the corner where the shower wall meets the ceiling in our Marina apartment. It’s been incredibly humid lately and I think our bathroom’s exhaust fan isn’t powerful enough. What’s the most effective way to clean this safely, and should I be calling my building management to have them check the ventilation?

Black mold in a bathroom ceiling corner is common in Dubai's humidity, especially with inadequate ventilation. For a small patch (under one square foot), you can clean it safely yourself.
First, protect yourself. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection to avoid inhaling spores or skin contact. Ventilate the area by opening a window and running the exhaust fan. Mix a solution of one part distilled white vinegar to one part water in a spray bottle. For stubborn mold, a dedicated mold remover or a diluted bleach solution (one part bleach to four parts water) can be used, but never mix cleaning products. Spray the area thoroughly, let it sit for 15 minutes, then scrub with a stiff brush. Wipe clean with a damp cloth and dry the area completely. The root cause is almost always excess moisture. Your building management is responsible for maintaining the central ventilation system, including the exhaust fan's power and ducting. Contact them to inspect and verify its performance. In many Marina apartments, fans are underpowered for the room size. While waiting, leave the fan running for at least 30 minutes after each shower and leave the bathroom door open to promote air circulation. If the mold returns quickly after cleaning, covers a large area (multiple square feet), or you smell a persistent musty odor, a professional inspection is recommended. They can identify hidden moisture sources and perform air or surface sampling to determine the mold species, which is important for assessing health risks and planning effective remediation. |
