How to safely clean black mold from toys and walls?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop since the weather got more humid, and I finally pulled out their wooden toy chest from the corner of their bedroom in our Jumeirah villa. The back of it, which is against the wall, is covered in this black, fuzzy stuff and the wall itself has dark streaks. What’s the safest way to clean this up myself without risking my family’s health?

The safest approach is to assume it's a problematic mold and proceed with extreme caution, especially with children present. Do not attempt to clean it yourself if the area is larger than a square meter, the wall material is soft or crumbling, or anyone has compromised immunity.

For a small, contained area, you can clean it yourself with proper precautions. First, isolate the area. Move the toy chest to a well-ventilated space like a balcony, and seal the bedroom door with plastic sheeting and tape to prevent spores from spreading to the rest of the house. Wear an N95 mask, goggles, and disposable gloves.

For the hard, non-porous surface of the toy chest, use a solution of one part distilled white vinegar to one part water or a diluted bleach solution (one cup of bleach to one gallon of water). Scrub with a stiff brush, then wipe clean and allow it to dry completely in the sun. For the painted wall, the same cleaning solutions can be used, but be aware that mold can penetrate porous materials like drywall and paint. If the staining remains or the wall feels soft, the material is compromised and must be replaced.

After cleaning, the room must be kept dry. This black mold grew due to condensation, a common issue in Dubai when humid air meets cold walls from constant AC use. Improve air circulation in that corner by moving furniture away from the wall and ensuring your AC unit is serviced and draining properly to reduce indoor humidity.

Given the health symptoms and the fact this was hidden behind furniture, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can use a moisture meter to identify other potential condensation points in the room and perform air quality testing to confirm the spore count has returned to a safe level after cleaning. This is the only way to be certain the environment is healthy for your children.
