How to safely clean black mold in bedroom?« Back to Previous Page
|
We’ve lived in our villa in Mirdif for 2 years and just noticed a patch of fuzzy black spots spreading along the corner of our master bedroom wall, right behind the wardrobe. It's been incredibly humid the last few weeks and I think the lack of air circulation made it worse. What's the most effective way to clean this ourselves, and is it safe to stay in the room while we do it?

The fuzzy black spots spreading behind your wardrobe are a classic sign of condensation-driven mold growth, very common in Mirdif villas due to our high humidity and temperature fluctuations. The wall behind furniture becomes a cold spot with no air circulation, allowing moisture to condense and mold to flourish.
For a patch smaller than one square meter, you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask, safety goggles, and rubber gloves to avoid inhaling spores or skin contact. Isolate the area by closing the room's door and placing a wet towel at the base to contain spores. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar with four parts water; avoid bleach as it only removes the colour and can push roots deeper into porous materials like gypsum board. Scrub the area gently with a stiff brush, then wipe dry with a disposable cloth. It is not safe to stay in the room during cleaning. Wait at least an hour after cleaning and ensure the room is well-ventilated before re-entering. However, cleaning only addresses the visible growth. The underlying cause is excess moisture. You must move the wardrobe away from the wall to improve air circulation and use a dehumidifier or run your AC more consistently to keep humidity below 60%, which is critical in Dubai's climate. If the mold returns quickly, the patch is larger than one square meter, the wall feels soft or damp, or any household members experience persistent sinus issues or headaches, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They can use moisture meters to find hidden dampness and lab tests to identify the mold species, which dictates the correct remediation protocol for a long-term solution. |
