How to safely clean black mold in closet?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black, fuzzy mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and I'm worried the recent humidity has made it worse. What's the best way to clean this safely, and should I call my landlord about this or handle it myself?

Based on the description of the black, fuzzy mold on an exterior wall in your closet, this is a significant indicator of a potential moisture intrusion issue, which is common in Dubai due to the high humidity and condensation problems associated with year-round AC use. The wall cavity may be experiencing condensation from the temperature differential between the cooled interior and the hot, humid exterior.

For a small patch (less than one square meter), you can clean it yourself with caution. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Do not attempt to dry scrub, as this will aerosolize spores. Use a solution of diluted detergent or a dedicated mildew cleaner. Apply it to the area, allow it to sit, and then wipe it clean with a damp cloth. Ensure the area is thoroughly dried afterwards. However, this only addresses the symptom, not the root cause.

Given the location on an exterior wall, this is a structural concern that falls under your landlord's responsibility for maintaining the property's integrity. I strongly recommend you inform them immediately. The moisture source must be professionally identified and rectified; it could be insufficient insulation, a leak in the building envelope, or HVAC-related condensation.

For a definitive diagnosis of the mold type and the moisture source, a professional inspection is advised. Our certified inspectors at Saniservice use thermal imaging cameras and moisture meters to pinpoint the exact cause. We can then provide a remediation protocol to ensure it is removed safely and completely.
