How to safely clean black mold with kids?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing more than usual and I’ve just spotted a bunch of black spots growing behind the toilet in our master bathroom. It's been so humid lately that the window is constantly fogged up, and the smell is really musty. What’s the safest way to clean this myself without using harsh chemicals that could affect my family?

As a certified mold inspector in the UAE, I strongly advise caution. The black spots you've described behind the toilet are highly likely to be Stachybotrys chartarum, a toxigenic mold that can cause respiratory irritation, especially in children. The constant high humidity and condensation from your AC system in Dubai's climate create the perfect breeding ground for this.

For a small area (less than 1 square meter), you can attempt to clean it yourself. Your priority is containment and non-toxic remediation. First, ensure the room is well-ventilated; open the window and run the exhaust fan. Isolate the area from children and pets. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection.

Mix a solution of distilled white vinegar and warm water (1:1 ratio) or a 3% concentration of hydrogen peroxide. Avoid bleach, as it only removes the surface color and can release harmful fumes, particularly in a poorly ventilated bathroom. Scrub the area thoroughly with a stiff-bristled brush. After cleaning, completely dry the surface with a fan or dehumidifier to prevent immediate regrowth.

However, given that your children are already exhibiting symptoms (coughing) and the presence of a persistent musty odor, this indicates a potential airborne spore issue that surface cleaning will not address. Spores can become aerosolized during cleaning, worsening the problem. For the health and safety of your family, a professional inspection is strongly recommended to assess the full extent of the contamination and to perform hygienization.
