How to safely clean closet mold and check for moisture?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our villa in Jumeirah for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black, fuzzy mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. I think it might be from the humidity, but I'm worried it's a bigger problem with the wall itself. What's the best way to clean this safely, and should I get a professional to check for moisture in the walls?

The black mold in your closet is a common issue in Dubai, especially in enclosed spaces with poor air circulation and high humidity. This is likely caused by condensation from your AC interacting with the warm, still air inside the closet, not necessarily a major structural issue.

For a small patch (under one square foot), you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar with three parts water and scrub the area. Avoid bleach, as it only removes the surface color and can push spores into the air. Thoroughly dry the area with a fan afterward to prevent immediate regrowth.

Given Dubai's climate, the root cause is almost always excess moisture. Check if the closet's exterior wall feels damp or cold, indicating possible condensation. Ensure your AC is set to a consistent temperature and that the room’s closet doors are left ajar periodically to allow for air flow. For villas, the problem can sometimes be traced to a slightly leaking AC condensation drain line inside the wall.

If the mold returns quickly, covers a larger area, or you detect a musty odor or signs of water damage on the wall, a professional inspection is recommended. They use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to pinpoint hidden dampness within the wall cavity that you cannot see. This diagnostic step is crucial to prevent recurrence, as simply cleaning surface mold is a temporary fix if there's an underlying moisture issue. A certified inspector can provide a lab analysis to identify the mold type and its potential health risks.
